Two Ohio representatives who are not up for re-election are making a last-minute grab for Ohio’s vaccination exemptions!

State Representative Anne Gonzales and State Representative Al Landis are seeking cosponsors for a bill that would completely revamp the way parents can decline vaccines for their children. The state would adopt one form that would require a physician’s signature at each immunization checkpoint: kindergarten, 7th, and 12th grades. This would require parents who may not use conventional health care to see doctors who may pressure them into vaccinating. And we don’t even know what kind of language would end up comprising that form which could implicate parents who opt out for placing their children and others at risk.
Under the guise of protecting the immunocompromised and assisting public health officials during outbreaks, there would be data collection and publication of school immunization rates. This completely disregards the fact that outbreaks among highly vaccinated populations have been taking place for mumps, pertussis, and even influenza. Placing a mark on the unvaccinated as carriers of diseases is unfair, inaccurate, and discriminatory!
Another concern is that by tracking all of this via physicians, providers who write medical exemptions may be targeted as they have been in California and Australia.
The bottom line is that only a minority (around 3%) of Ohio parents use exemptions, and that minority has rights! Ohio law has given parents the right to decline vaccination in writing for reasons of conscience, including religious convictions. We have to protect those rights because they have been under fire from Ohio AAP, other medical organizations, and their pet legislators, some of whom have heard stories from parents who lost children and whose children sustained serious permanent injuries after vaccination.
If these legislators and lobbying groups are so concerned with children’s health, then maybe they should put their energy and resources into solving the childhood epidemics of chronic physical, emotional, developmental, and mental health issues. Instead they go after a small number of families who opt out of all or some vaccines!
TAKE ACTION!
Contact Reps. Gonzales and Landis ASAP and often and let them know that Ohio parents will not stand for any changes to exemptions. The constant threats to a minority of families need to stop. Because this bill is being sponsored late in the legislative session by two Republicans, we are very concerned.

A new Ohio Bill (HB559) is being introduced this week that would require a doctor’s signature to get a religious or philosophical/good cause exemption.
What happens when your pediatrician refuses to sign? You can’t find a doctor to sign?
IF YOU ARE PRO-VACCINE you should still care about exemptions. What happens when they start requiring Gardisil (which other states are already trying to add) which is a vaccine even most pro-vaxxers refuse for their childen,or flu for school age children? You won’t be able to exempt without a doctor signature.
The Ohio American Academy of Pediatrics wants ALLLLL exemptions but medical taken away and they are up there DAILY trying to make this happen. THIS IS JUST THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THEIR GOAL!

Senate Bill 180 and its companion legislation House Bill 228, would assign to the prosecution the burden of disproving a self-defense or related claim, expand the locations at which a person has no duty to retreat before using force under both civil and criminal law, and modify the Concealed Handgun Licensing Law regarding a licensee's duty to keep the licensee's hands in plain sight, the penalties for illegally carrying a concealed firearm or improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and the posting of warning signs regarding the possession of weapons on specified premises.S.B. 180 was introduced on August 15, 2017 by Senators Joe Uecker (R-Miami Township) and Jay Hottinger (R-Newark). Currently, the bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Senate Bill 288 and its companion legislation House Bill 585 , which would expand the definition of dangerous ordnance to include armor piercing ammunition and expand the definition of an automatic firearm to include any device within the federal definition of machine gun; create additional conditions under which an individual may not possess a firearm or dangerous ordnance and eliminate the process by which an individual may apply for relief from a weapons disability; generally prohibit a person from buying, purchasing, obtaining, or furnishing a firearm on behalf of a third party; provide for the entry of protection orders into the federal NCIC database and LEADS; and provide for the issuance by a court of an extreme risk protection order.S.B. 288 was introduced on April 9, 2018 by Senators John Eklund (R-Munson Township) and Stephanie Kunze (R-Hilliard). Senate Bill 278 would enact the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act to allow family members, household members, and law enforcement officers to obtain a court order that temporarily restricts a person's access to firearms if that person poses a danger to themselves or others.S.B. 278 was introduced on March 26, 2018 by Senators Joe Schiavoni (D-Boardman) and Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland). Currently, the bill is pending in the Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee.
Senate Bill 150 and its companion legislation House Bill 305 would require a court that issues a protection order to determine if the respondent is prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm, to require a court to determine whether an offender who has been convicted of specified offenses is prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm and require a respondent or offender who the court determines is prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm to transfer all firearms in the person's possession to a law enforcement agency or a federally licensed firearms dealer.H.B. 305 was introduced on July 18, 2017 by Representatives Nicki Antonio (D-Lakewood) and Janine Boyd (D-Cleveland Heights). Currently, the bill is pending in the House Federalism and Interstate Relations Committee. S.B. 150 was introduced on May 16, 2017 by Senator Edna Brown (D-Toledo). Currently, the bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
House Bill 151 and its companion legislation Senate Bill 283 would prohibit a transfer of a firearm from a person who is not a federally licensed firearms dealer to a person who is not a federally licensed firearms dealer unless it is done through a federally licensed firearms dealer, through a state or local law enforcement agency, or pursuant to a specified exception; require that background checks be conducted when a firearm is transferred through a federally licensed firearms dealer or a state or local law enforcement agency and provide for record keeping with respect to information obtained pursuant to such a background check.H.B.151 was introduced on March 22, 2017 by Representative Bill Patmon (D-Cleveland). Currently, the bill is pending in the House Federalism and Interstate Relations Committee. S.B. 283 was introduced on March 26, 2018 by Senators Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and Joe Schiavoni (D-Boardman). Senate Bill 219 and its companion legislation House Bill 395 would prohibit the manufacture, sale, or transfer of any trigger crank, bump-fire device or other product that accelerates a semi-automatic firearm's rate of fire but does not convert it into an automatic firearm.S.B. 219 was introduced on October 17, 2017 by Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati). Currently, the bill is pending in the Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee. H.B. 395 was introduced on October 26, 2017 by Representative Bill Patmon (D-Cleveland).Currently, the bill is pending in the House Federalism and Interstate Relations Committee.
Senate Bill 260 would prohibit a person from knowingly possessing or acquiring an assault weapon and require the Attorney General to prepare for the establishment of a firearm and ammunition transactions database. S.B. 260 was introduced on February 20, 2018 by Senators Charleta Tavares (D-Columbus) and Senator Michael Skindell (D-Lakewood). Currently, the bill is pending in the Senate Government and Oversight Committee.
Senator Hackett has always been a firm defender of our Second Amendment rights to own and utilize firearms. As you may know, he has a strong supportive voting history for gun ownership. Senator Hackett believes it is important that Ohio has responsible firearm legislation, which includes proper training and education on how and when to use a firearm and includes background checks on individuals in an effort to protect the public. Most importantly, Senator Hackett contends any legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly should maintain a level of safety for our communities while also allowing those who choose to carry firearms to safely do so. Should any of these bills come before the entire Senate for a vote, Senator Hackett will certainly keep your views in mind.
